Body Composition

Body Composition

Body composition is one of the determinant factors in one’s energy needs. Body Mass Index (BMI) is useful for analyzing populations but not so great for analyzing individuals. Individuals who are looking to get fitter, shouldn’t pay attention to the Body Mass Index (BMI) but rather to body composition instead.

Body composition is the percentages of muscle, bone, fat and water in human body.
  • Muscle is the most metabolic tissue in our body; consequently, it requires more energy than other body tissues to maintain itself.
Feed the muscles    +    stay active    >>    burn stored fat
  • Men are naturally more muscular and need more energy than women do.
  • Because muscular tissue takes up less space in our body than fat tissue, our body composition, as well as our weight, determines leanness.
  • Children and young adults undergoing developmental changes in …
    • height,
    • weight, and
    • body composition … need greater energy.
  • Energy requirements drop with age due to declining muscle tissue.
