Why do we recommend “full body stretching” for fat burning?

Here are our reasons:

First and foremost, we don’t need to worry about bulking up. Full body stretching tones and strengthens our long muscles. Stretching leads to higher caloric consumption, meaning more stored fat will be used as fuel for our cells. Stretching increases our heart rate, which in turn aids in boosting our metabolism.

Full body stretching …

  • fires up all the muscles in our body,
  • firms up our arms, legs, butt, and abs,
  • tones our belly fat,
  • builds overall strength and stamina,
  • improves our flexibility,
  • supports a happy healthy back,
  • lowers levels of stress hormones,
  • increases insulin sensitivity (prompts our body to burn food as fuel rather than store it as fat),
  • kicks our metabolism into high gear,
  • connects us with our breath,
  • improves our digestion,
  • burns calories, and
  • turns our body into a fat-burning machine.

What do we need for stretching?

All we need are:

  • a flat space,
  • a floor mat, and
  • comfortable exercise outfit.
Tips to make full body stretching more comfortable for bigger people

Widen your stance. In many standing postures, feet are often supposed to be hip-width apart. But if you’re bigger, it may help to spread your feet farther until they’re at a comfortable distance to increase stability.

Know your body. If the skin of your belly, thighs, arms or breasts get in the way, grab on and move it. This type of instruction may not be written in the scripts of most stretching classes, so take the initiative to make yourself more comfortable.

Use props. If your instructor wants you to touch your hands to your toes for a hamstring stretch, don’t respond with a sarcastic eye roll. A simple strap can help you achieve this stretch and support you in other poses, too. Check out also some instruction videos which demonstrate the best use of straps.

Be positive. Stretching isn’t about competition, and it’s not about perfection. Use the practice as an opportunity to connect with your mind and body. Connecting to yourself is the only way to true health.

Is it wrong for a Christian to practice yoga?

... if he or she is strictly doing yoga for exercise.

Yoga exercises are very beneficial. They are stretching exercises. They are deep breathing exercises. But if you have to say some kind of a mantra, then you are praying in Sanskrit to some Hindu god; and that’s the part you don’t want to get involved in. Yoga has relationship of spiritual along with the physical. But in terms of stretching exercises, there is nothing wrong with stretching. That’s what it is. Just don’t get into the Sanskrit mantra like you got to do; don’t let that happen to you. But with stretching, I don’t see anything wrong with it. It’s an exercise. –Pastor Pat Robertson
