CERF Ranch

Saving Lives For 30 Years

California Equine Retirement Foundation (CERF) is a non-profit Thoroughbred horse sanctuary that has saved more than 300 horses since it’s opening in 1986.

CERF (California Equine Retirement Foundation) is dedicated to rescuing Thoroughbred horses from slaughter and rehabilitating them. Our mission is to give them a humane and well deserved retirement. We believe that no Thoroughbred should be denied a dignified retirement. We know that together, we can make a difference and save lives.

The CERF Ranch was founded out of love for a racehorse named “John Henry.” The organization operated out of Winchester, California until recently. In 2015, CERF Ranch moved to its current location in San Jacinto, Southern California. Here, our herd of retired horses live together on natural pasture and share open barns and leisure sheds which keep them happy and comfortable the year round.

The organization has taken its mission early on to the next level. CERF Ranch became the first accredited Thoroughbred horse retirement facility in the United States.  Furthermore, the CERF is the only equine facility in California which is listed in the  Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries.

The CERF Ranch strives to increase the number of retirees that we care for. Once they get here, CERF provides best possible quality of care. Our goal is to continue helping Thoroughbred horses that come to our ranch, and giving them a second chance through sanctuary.
