Why Does Our Body Need Energy?

Why does our body need energy?

Energy is another word for “calories.” Everything we do is fueled by energy produced from the calories we consume; while awake or asleep, resting or engaging in mental or physical activity, we need energy from our dietary calories.

  • fuels our body’s internal functions,
  • fuels repairs,
  • builds and maintains cells and body tissues, and
  • supports our physical activities.

Energy needs differ according to age, gender, body composition, health status and activity level.

Besides water, oxygen we breathe helps facilitate the chemical reactions that produce energy from food.
