What is Asian Cuisine?
Asian cuisine encompasses a vast array of culinary traditions and flavors from countries all across the Asian continent. From the aromatic spices of India, to the distinct flavors of Thailand, to the unique cooking techniques, and ingredients from China, to the delicate flavors of Japan and Korea, Asian cuisine offers an incredible range of tastes and textures featuring an incredibly diverse and rich culinary experience.
Asian cuisine differs from Western cuisine in several ways:
Flavor profiles: Asian cuisine often emphasizes a balance of flavors, which can include the use of spices, aromatic herbs, and umami-rich ingredients.
Cooking techniques: Asian cooking techniques like stir-frying, steaming, broiling, grilling and deep frying are commonly used, while Western cuisine often involves baking, roasting, and braising.
Ingredients: Asian cuisine incorporates a wide range of unique ingredients such as soy sauce, fish sauce, rice, noodles, and exotic spices like turmeric and star anise.
Spiciness: Not all Asian dishes are spicy. While certain cuisines like Thai and Indian are known for their spiciness, Asian cuisine offers a wide range of flavors, including mild and non-spicy dishes.
Cultural influences: Asian cuisine is deeply intertwined with cultural practices and traditions, while Western cuisine is heavily influenced by European culinary traditions.
How does Chef Janine substitute staple ingredients in Asian cuisine in order to master the Asian dishes to qualify as "ketogenic"?
Rice: Rice plays a central role in Asian cuisine, particularly in East and Southeast Asia. It is the main staple food and often accompanies dishes as a side or forms the base of various dishes like sushi, biryani, and fried rice. In place of white rice, Chef Janine uses cauliflower rice, broccoli rice, and hearts of palm rice.
Noodles: In place of noodles, Chef Janine uses shirataki noodles, spiralized zucchini, and hearts of palm noodles.
Soy sauce: An essential condiment in Asian cooking, soy sauce adds savory flavors to various dishes. In place of soy sauce, Chef Janine uses coconut aminos.
Soy bean oil: In place of soy bean oil, Chef Janine uses avocado, and coconut oil, and lard.
What is fusion cuisine?
Fusion cuisine is a culinary style that combines elements from different cultures, traditions, and cuisines to create innovative, unique, and exciting new dishes. It involves blending various ingredients, cooking techniques, and flavors to create a harmonious fusion of two or more culinary traditions. Fusion is an important aspect of making our Asian meals perfectly ketogenic.
